You can't win them all!

Spent an hour and a half at the rink tonight with my 7 year old. He skated up and down ice, played right wing, but definitely had the look of a 2 way player the majority of the game. It's difficult to be in your first year of hockey and wanting desperately to win games. He's on a young team, they try so hard, and they have definitely improved over the course of this short season. They have an incredible coach who encourages them and tries to teach them about the game.
Our little #19 just seems to have a feel for what is going on. He plays end to end hockey every time he is on the ice. At one point he was trying to power through 3 players on the other team at the blue line. One did get called for interference but at that age they don't play short handed, or go into the penalty box unless it's really serious. He did keep plugging away. Dumped it into the corner to himself. Skated down the right side of the goalie, battled along the boards and then wrapped it behind the goal and stuck it in on the goalie's left side. He just keep chipping away until it went in. He was so excited. Turned out to be the only goal for his team. Score is not suppose to matter at this age, but unfortunately to 7 year olds it usually does some. At least he can say he put one up on the scoreboard.

Talk about sportsmanship

Just yesterday morning I was talking to my son about choosing to do the right thing when things make you angry. It's OK to get angry, frustrated, annoyed. But I reminded him that regardless there is a right and wrong way to act.

Later in the day my son, the boy who loves hockey, was watching the Detroit Red Wings take on the Calgary Flames. Talk about an object lesson being played out. Calgary is a tough team, and I would even dare to say on occasion a good team in terms of their ability to play hockey. Yet yesterday they showed that they were a team that had a lack of respect for the game as well as for other players safety. Yes, I imagine they were mad they were losing a game that was important to them. Seems to me the Wings most likely were mad the 2 games they lost in Calgary too. The difference is that teams can be expected to attack the puck, play hard, knock some players into the boards, say some words I won't repeat, and occasionally throw the gloves down and go at it. It's beyond that where the issue lies. In plays like punching a player in the face, after he caused a penalty that he was going to be sent to the box for. Not just merely punching him, but rather grabbing the back of his head, holding it still and then taking a hard swing. A swing that has sidelined that player for probably a few games. Come on! He was already being called for the clip, why go after him. Or let's talk about McLennan the goalie, brought in to rest Kiprusoff (yes I know I can't spell their names) Or, was he brought it to go after the Wings? Isn't it great that when he got sent off of the ice and out of the game his Assistant Captain smacked him on the head as if to say good job! Now there is some great sportsmanship! Or their Captain skating down the ice with Schneider not even by the puck and hitting him with the end of his stick and cross checking him, just "to keep the anger going in the game" as I believe he was quoted as saying. Well isn't he just the player I want my son to look up to as he follows hockey.

Now, I'm not saying the Wings are perfect, and yes they do get angry during games. They have thrown their share of punches over the seasons/years. The biggest difference is that we have players that do know when to walk away. I'm just going to go out on a limb and say that Schneider, Franzen and Draper and Lebda were more then a bit ticked about the hits for no apparent reason put on them. But they had the ability to take their anger and walk away. The game was already won, with one more to go. They can take the energy and walk away from the fight.

And as a Mom who has a son who is growing up wanting to be a hockey player I say "Thank you Wings! Not only for this last game, but for other times when you have known that the C or A or just simply the Wings crest on your chest meant 'I stand up for a game I love and I respect the game I play.' Thank you for having players that, while not perfect, are men that I can point my son to look at in terms of skill and response on the ice. Thank you for having leadership that makes it possible to say to Zach you don't have to be a goon to lead. You can lead with respect as Yzerman did for years and as Lidstrom is doing now. Thank you for knowing that their are boys watching you, and that the choices you make on the ice do make a difference to not only the game that you play but the boys who will follow in your footsteps"

So, what will happen tonight? Will the leadership of Calgary stand up and take the responsibility they should to say what we did is wrong.? Will Toronto dish out penalites and fines and possibly even suspensions for reckless actions. I doubt it.

But, regardless of the outcome of the game tonight I know that while tempers may flair the Wings will leave the ice with their fans being thankful that they truly love and respect the game they play. And while they may initiate a fight or too, yes I realize it's a part of hockey, they won't be the players purposely going after another player to "keep the anger going".
So for that this hockey Mom thanks you.

Just incase you wanted to know McLennan was suspended for the next 6 games. But NOTHING was done to Captain Iginla for his incredible show of sportsmanship. Wouldn't want to punish someone for leading in the wrong direction now would we?

Grey Skies are???? gonna clear up?

I've lived in the Cleveland Ohio area almost my entire life. I've seen seasons come and go. Mainly, I've seen seasons change. In fact as even my 4 year old can tell you the seasons are winter, spring, summer and fall. So, with that in mind I'd like to ask if this is winting, or spinter, because it still somewhat resembles winter although the flowers have pushed up so it must also be spring.
I don't usually like to complain about the weather. I know that God has the ultimate plan and that He knows what is best for the earth. Unfortunately, waking up to a beautiful sunny morning, which lasted only for an hour, wears on me after awhile. The grey skies just keep rolling back in. I know...grey skies are gonna clear up, put on a happy face. So, I'm working on it. Good news is, a friend who lives a few states over had beautiful weather a day ago...maybe it's on the way!

So onto other things. Like hockey. Good topic. My poor son apparently threw his body into a play tonight as his team was demolished 7-0. It's only mite hockey so they are just learning but bless the little boy he's trying so hard. It's all he wants to do. In fact I probably should start training now because come summer while Daddy is at work, I have a feeling I'll be in the driveway with roller blades on, stick in hand getting demolished myself. Oh, well it's for the kids, it will be fun. They better not laugh. Better get on out there. (why is it I can quote Veggie Tales but can't remember what day of the week it is half of the time).
Anyway, he skated down a kid on a breakaway and threw himself at the puck. Then of course the kid, who was bigger then him fell on him. Did I mention he wears #19? Talk about someone who sacrificed his body for the game. Stevie Y is still our son's first choice to be like. We just had to choose possible hockey numbers for next year. His choice 19, for Steve Yzerman, or 5 for Nicholas Lidstrom, or finally with a little bit of help from me 14 for Shannahan. The kid certainly has good taste in hockey favorites.
Well, since it's getting late I best stop rambling. Seems I was up until almost 1 last night in support of the Red Wings. On the very, super, incredible remote chance that anyone remotely associated with the Wings reads this...tomorrow night guys we're staying up late to support you again so keep playing hard the victory is out there to be had. Oh, and tell Langer to SHOOT THE PUCK!!!! Yes, I realize that he is a good player, he just seems to have forgotten part of the phrase. He has pass down but to quote Miracle the rest of it goes "pass, shoot, score!" Other then that boys keep up the good work!

I guess that about does it for now.

Getting Started

Like all things it takes a first step to get started. It seems the age we live in is a computer world, including the whole realm of blogging. I guess it's time to take that step too. Just the other day I was discussing the fact that students today tend to not go to the library to do research they jump on line, we rarely ever look up phone numbers in a paper formatted phone book. Life revolves around the computer. I guess that's not entirely a bad thing, just funny to think that there was a time when we didn't have a home computer and now we actually have 3 in the house most of the time and 4 if my husband has brought his laptop home from work.
So, here I am in the blog mode myself. It's not too often I get the chance to just write about what is going on. Welcome to the year 2007!

So what is life like for me? To be honest it moves a little faster than I want it to some of the time. Ok, most of the time. But with a 7 and 4 year old I'm sure it's not moving as fast as it will in the future. I work from home which is awesome. I schedule work around what I have going on. I even get to say I need to "work" and then proceed to spend a few hours recording our families memories in my albums. Can't beat that for a job! I also get to find out the history of the people I work with all the time by listening to the stories they tell through their albums. I love finding out about people. Where they've been, what they do and what they are dreaming of doing. I guess that's why my job fits me so well.

I guess that's where blogging fits in too. As a history of life as I know it in 2007 and beyond. (somewhere in there I can hear Buzz Lightyear yelling "to infinity and beyond"...ok the kids have only watched that movie a million times!)

So we'll see where this adventure goes. After all, to quote the Creative Memories slogan this is about my life/my story/my way.
