Pinterest Idea Results- #1 Cleaning the Washing Machine

It's almost 2014 and I've decided to actually try some of the Pinterest ideas that I've collected over this last year.  Why bother pinning if I'm never going to use them right?

Idea #1 Cleaning the Washing Machine

I hate to admit, but cleaning the washing machine was never really on my list of things to do.  I mean, it's always getting washed right? Unfortunately, no, it really isn't.  I should have taken a before picture, but I was trying to get it started and amazingly enough, taking a picture slipped my mind.

For this project you need to be home for at least 4 hours, 1 pint of bleach, and 1 pint of vinegar, a sponge, towel and old toothbrush too.

Step 1: fill the washer with hot water and 1 pint ( 4 cups- I looked it up) of bleach.  Let it agitate for 1 minute then sit in the washer for 1 hour.

Step 2: Run the largest load setting all the way through without detergent.

Step 3: Fill the washer with hot water and 1 pint of white vinegar. Let it agitate for 1 minute and then sit for 1 hour.

Step 4: While it is sitting, dip a sponge or old toothbrush into the water and scrub the lid, rim, and any other surface you can reach.  I actually pulled the agitator all the way out and scrubbed in down too.  I highly suggest waiting until the whole process is done to do that as I had trouble getting back in. Oops! Wipe dry the surface when done.

Step 5: Run the largest load setting all the way through without detergent.

Step 6: Repeat this process at least twice a year!  I already put it on my calendar to do again this summer.

It really was a simple project, and the washer looks so much better.  I haven't done any more laundry today, so I'll have to see if the clothes seem cleaner too when I do the next load.  I had everything already in the house, supply wise, so it made it easy to do on a day when I was planning on being home.

Great tip! Clean washer! Double bonus!!!

Book Review: Book 85

Product DetailsBook 85: Radical by David Platt

We are watered down, as Christians throughout the world. We aren't really living the Gospel message to those we come in contact with for multiple reasons. One of the ones that grabbed  me the most as I read this book, is we don't really follow the scriptures.  We think we do, we like the nice ones, the easy to follow ones, but the hard ones we ignore. What will it really take to live a life worthy of Christ?  What would it take to live a life that shows God's love to the world. It would truly be hard.  We are so comfortable here in the US especially.  Comfortable in our churches, ok with watered down truth. What if we were Radical and preached what God was really showing through his son?  Are we willing to find out.
I can't really sum up this book, but I can say it's gotten be thinking.  I'm thankful that I have read through the Bible, but am I living it out truly in all I do.  I know I have some growing to do, and I'm excited to start this next year off with that in mind. Taken back my life from the world and offering it truly to God.  I won't be perfect, but I am going to strive to be true.

Read the Bible if nothing else this next year.  When you've given time to God, then consider other books like Radical, to make you focus on what He truly wants for your life.

Book Reviews: Book 82, 83 and 84

The end of the year is quickly approaching.  I'm guessing with it, the end of my book challenge.  I have the book Radical almost finished, just a chapter away from the end, but I'm not sure I'll be able to add that one to my list.  I'll have to see how it goes.  I have finished the following books though.

Product DetailsBook 82: Treading Water by Marie Force

This book is about a man named Jack Harrington, who everyone thinks has it all together.  The problem is he is beginning to wonder if he does, when the unthinkable happens.  His wife is involved in an accident and he must determine what step to take next.  He struggles to be the husband he needs to be for her, while trying to become the Dad that he hasn't been for the past several years.  In the process he also realizes how very lonely he has become.

Andi Walsh is just trying to get by in her career and make a living for her and her son.  She has vowed off of marriage and relationships in general after her son's father leaves her when he realizes their son is deaf.  Now she just wants to succeed at being a mother, and an interior designer.  Then the unthinkable happens. She falls in love with her client.  From the beginning Jack is upfront with her about his life situation, but through the encouragement of family and friends they determine they should make a go of this new relationship.

Will it succeed, or will unsettled issues arise and get in their way.  I'd tell you more, but it really would ruin the story.

I'd give this book 4 stars. It was good, but I was happy that it was free, and I'm not sure I will read the sequels unless they too become free at some point.

Product DetailsBook 83: The Billionaires Con by Mackenzie Crowne

Meggy is on the verge of the success she has been dreaming of for sometime. She is opening her own restaurant with friends in her small town just outside of Boston.  She's also just recently discovered that her birth mother was the daughter of one of New England's most powerful families.  While she struggles with what to do with this information there is one thing she is sure of. She wants to succeed on her own, and while she is interested in finding out more about her family heritage, she doesn't want their money or their help.
Trevor is the determined that no one will harm his Grandmother, and will do whatever it takes to see that doesn't happen. He moves into  Meggy's carriage house hoping to prove that she is looking for wealth from his family as a con artist. What he doesn't anticipate is falling in love with her in the process.
Will the lies and deception ruin the chance they have at happiness? Again, without reading it, you won't be able to tell.

This was a fun book to read, filled with many twists and turns.  I'd give it 4 stars.

Book 84:One Night with a Rock Star by Chana Keefer

Esther has loved Sky for as long as she can remember.  When her friend Marti comes up with a plan to meet him at his concert in town Esther is torn.  Should she go, despite the fact that she'll have to lie to get in? Ultimately she does decide to go, despite her belief that lying to get in is wrong. What she doesn't plan on is actually meeting Sky and spending time with him.  While her night with a rock star could have been what people would imagine it would have been it was not. She held to her morals, and in the process discovered that Sky, beneath it all really isn't as confident in who he is as she thought he would be.  She also finds herself falling even harder for him.
Life isn't easy though and despite the connection they appeared to have made, he disappears into his world and she has to go back to her own reality.  A reality that is filled with challenges, relationships and learning. She is trying to determine where she should end up in life and as finds herself on her final leg of discovering what to do in Scotland.  This post graduation gift is offering her a chance to determine what and who is best in her life.  Will that one night with a rock star end up being the deciding factor?
Get reading if you wan to find out.
I'd give this book 4.5 stars although finding out the next book isn't due out until 2015 was disappointing, especially after reading the sneak peek into what is coming next. I'm guessing by 2015 I'll forget about it, but right now, I'm not to happy with where the characters are headed!

I set out to read more books than last year which had a total of 55.  That seemed overwhelming at the time, and yet this year I've read 84, almost 85!  I guess what I'm finding out is reading is far more enjoyable than television and that sneaking in moments here and there to read, allows my mind to continue to grow.  Not sure if I'll top 84 again next year or not. Although, it's always worth a try!

Happy Reading and Happy New Year!

Book Reviews: Book 81

BooBook

Book 81: Summer of Firefly Memories

This book is about finding what is lost and grabbing onto it with both hands.  It's searching for those flashes of memories, kind of like the lights of the fireflies.  Sammy misses her sisters, and spending time with them.  She misses their closeness but over the last twenty years they have drifted even farther apart.  Coming back to the lake her parents once took them to seems like the perfect place to see if they can reconnect.
She arrives earlier than they do and begins to unwind and rethink where she is and where she is headed. It's a good time to refocus, and relax.  Slowly her sisters begin to arrive and with each one a new set of trials and heartaches arrive to.  Will Sammy be able to reach them all, or is it just too late for that.

This was a great quick read, with lots of depth of insight into making things right in our worlds.

I'd give this book 5 stars.

Book 82: Down From the Clouds by Marilyn Grey
Gavin has spent his whole life trying to figure out why things never seem to happen the way he has planned.  Now he and fiancĂ©e Ella are on a wild goose chase to figure out his Grandpa's will. In the process his long lost dad shows up.  Not sure what to do, be begins to close down, even from Ella. Can she draw him back out and help him see that sometimes looking back and letting go is easier than staying where you are?

This book was filled with characters that came to life.  Characters that you found yourself want to succeed in what they were trying to accomplish.  Great story.

I'd give the book 4 stars.

Book Reviews: Books 70-80

Product Details Books 70-80 The Sister Grimm Series by Michael Buckley

Wow!!  This series of 9 books, plus the complete guide to the Sisters Grimm is wonderful!!! Designed for kids, ages 9 and up is the range I would guess, it is perfect for adults too.

The premise is what if the Brothers Grimm, and Hans Christian Anderson weren't  making up fairytales, but rather recording history.  With that it mind the author spins us into a web of fairytale characters that inhabit the earth.  The history behind the books is that the Sister's ancestors brought the fairytale people and creatures, they prefer the name Everafters, to the United States to escape the persecution they were beginning to feel in Europe. Once in the United States they settled into a town they named Fairyport Landing, just outside of New York City on the Hudson River. As time began to move on, humans began to move in to the town.  This started to cause problems and the no so good members of the Everafters decided to try and take over the world by starting a war led by the Scarlet Hand.  To prevent this from happening a spell was cast on Fairyport Landing trapping the Everafters in the town.  It also cast a spell on the Grimm family, causing them to always have at least one member of the family that would also have to remain in the town.

Years have gone by and Sabrina and Daphne have found themselves orphans.  Their parents disappeared 2 years ago, and the only clue was a Scarlet Hand left on he dashboard of their car. The police had no idea what the  hand print meant.  The girls were then shuffled between foster homes, all of which they needed to escape from. Finally, they have found themselves in Ferryport Landing (the name was changed over the years).  They are placed into the care of Relda Grimm, who claims to be their Grandmother.  They struggle to believe her, as their father told them she was dead.  Besides their father's story, she appears to be as crazy as the rest of the foster homes, this time claiming giants are attacking the town.

Little do the girls know when they first arrive in town that they will soon become the towns leading Fairy Detectives, searching out who is good and who is bad among the Everafters and trying to prevent the Scarlet Hand from taking over the world.

The books in the series are:
The Fairy Detectives
The Unusual Suspects
The Problem Child
Once Upon a Crime
Magic and Other Misdemeanors
Tales From the Hood
The Everafter War
The Inside of Story
The Council of Mirrors
and the guide book Sisters Grimm a Very Grimm Guide

I would love to write more about each book, and how the characters grow and develop and all of the different Fairytale characters that enter the books, however, doing so would risk giving too much away.  The stories are captivating, filled with mystery, misdirection and clues to solve the greatest puzzle of all, who is truly the leader of the Scarlet Hand.  The books took me less than a month to read, and my daughter is currently reading through them as well. Truth be told she started and I passed her, it's just the way I read!

I would give this series 5 stars...for each book!!! It is very much worth the time it takes to read them!!

Book Reviews: Book 69

Product DetailsBook 69: Completely Restored by Robert Kerr

I haven't had time to update my book reviews lately, but I have been really busy reading.  I'm trying to figure out how I've really had the time, but sneaking a chapter or two in during the evenings or while waiting for the kids to finish practices seems to provide the opportunity to get through books.

This book revolves around a 3 story Victorian house that is in need of some renovations.  The family Joe, and Linda Murphy and their kids begin the process of restoring it after Linda convinces Joe that it would be their dream house.  Finally, they are ready for the final step, the front door complete with the original door lock.  Joe installs it and thinks it will be good to wake up in the morning with nothing on his to do list.
Little does he know that his to do list is about to drastically change, because he is going to be waking up in 1909, instead of 2009.  The family now must figure out how to restore themselves to their correct time line, if that is even possible or begin to accept life in this era.  It's not an easy task for 2 teenage children and their little sister, but they try to accept it as best they can.  They make some new friends, including the Doctor who lives next door.  Learning the rules and customs of the times can be a bit tricky, but finally the family seems to be fitting in.  Will they stay there, or somehow make their way back home.

It was an intriguing book, with an interesting concept.  The author did a good job of transporting the characters into this different time period, and explaining all the things they were needing to do to figure out how to live there without being discovered. It did keep me turning the pages to discover if they would eventually find their way home.

I'd give the book 4 stars.

I would give this book 4 stars.

Book 67: Hidden Falls
Knotted Roots Novella
by Ruthi Kight
All Katy wants to do is help out her friend.  She is looking for nothing in return.  She knows it's going to be a tough job to run the farm and take care of things while Roxie is busy handling her parents.  Katy is tough though and knows she can succeed. What she isn't counting on is Brian being a part of the scene.  Brian who thinks her life is perfect.  How little he knows.  How much he doesn't understand. What he begins to see the truth of her life and the mess it has really been will he run away or chose to stay and help her through the pain.
While the story was really good the ending was more than a cliff hanger. It just stopped.  I was sure I was missing pages until I read other reviews and found others feeling the same way.  I guess that's one way to make sure other books in the series are read, but I was a bit disappointed.

I'd give this book 3 stars based on the poor ending.

Book 68: Come Fly with Me
by Judith Whitmore
Product DetailsKate Randolph is a young and wealthy woman due to her marriage.  She however is not happy. She wonders if she is just the trophy wife.  She sinks herself into her passions of running a shelter for latch key children and learning to fly.  Her latest desire is to learn to fly her husbands new Lear jet.  In flying she finally feels released from the confines of her unhappy marriage.
Rick Sanders has been flying her husband around and discovers a secret.  One he isn't free to share in his profession, but one that is now tearing him apart as he has just recently been asked to teach Kate to fly the Lear. In the process of teaching her he begins to wonder if maybe she is the one who he is suppose to be learning from.  Both want new lives, but can they afford to find them together. He doesn't want to be the reason she finally leaves her husband, but he doesn't know how he can stay away from her either.
Just when you are sure you have it all figured out the plot changes and a new element changes the course the characters seemed to be set on.
This fun romance earns 4 stars on my personal star ratings.

Book Reviews: Book 62-65

Yes, once again I'm on a reading frenzy.  The funny thing is, I don't sit around and read all the time.  I find pockets of time here and there to read, but I've been getting stuff done around the house, and spending time with the family and everything.  Honest!!  I'm sure now that fall is here the number of books will slow down!

Book 62: Ciao Bella by Ryan M. Phillips
Isabella is celebrating her 30th birthday. Instead of being happily married with kids as she dreamed, she's single and feeling stuck.  She feels like her carefree friend Cam has it all, and she wants that too. This year for her birthday her friends Cam and Olly give her something that could change her life.  In the process will it change her from who she has always been, or convince her that who she was is who she is suppose to be.  On top of the gift she finds herself lucky in love in a way she never expected.  Faced with all kinds of life changes Isabella must decide what she really wants, and what truly is important.  Sometimes things are what they seem to be.  Can her friendships with Cam and Olly stand the changes she is making.  Only time will really tell.

This book was a lot of fun to read.  I think most people can identify with Isabella and wanting a life that someone else has, or at least thinking we do.  I'd give this book 5 stars.

Product Details Book 63: The Wedding Gift by Lucy Kevin
(book 1 in the Four Weddings and a Fiasco series)

Julie's dream of being a restaurant owner and chef on her own terms has been taken away by a bad review from Andrew Kyle, the gorgeous chef from the Cuisine Channel’s Edgy Eats show that he hosts as well.  Now she is working as a chef for the Rose Chalet.  Weddings and catering to each couple is just the change she needs to get back on her feet.  That is until Andrew walks into the door to act as liaison for his brother's upcoming wedding. Once again her cooking is going to be judged by this man. Will he wreck her current job in the process?

Andrew's family doesn't understand what he does.  They think it's a passing phase that someday, hopefully soon, he'll grow out of and instead become something important like a doctor or a lawyer.  All he really wants is to keep doing what he is doing, except he also wants the beautiful woman he has now run into twice in the cooking world.  Will she learn to trust him, or just think of him as the man that keeps wrecking her life.

They are both about to find out when their paths collide and she ends up on his cooking show as someone the fans absolutely love.  Not only the fans, but his family loves her too.  The real problem is, will she love him as well?

Fun, light hearted story.  The way it unfolds keeps you guessing too, which is always good.  Looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.

I'd give this book 5 stars.

Product Details Book 64: Slow Cooker 101: Master the Slow Cooker with 101 Recipes
by Perrin Davis
Ok, so reading a cookbook might not count as actually reading a book, but with all the books I do read, I'm counting it.  Plus, at the beginning it had a section with lots of good information about slow cookers and ingredients that are good to have in the house.  I bookmarked over half of the recipes and hope to try them this year.  I make my menus ahead of time and have a day that I designated as Slow Cooker day, so I'm sure I'll give these a try as I go.

I'd give the book 4 stars for now, until we taste the recipes.
Product Details Book 65: Wine in my Sippy Cup by Deborah Dove
Honestly, I downloaded the book because the cover was cute.  I figured it would be about a Mom who doesn't want to be a Mom, so I wasn't sure if I would really like it.  I was wrong.

The book is about Elizabeth Cartwright, a once very put together woman.  She had a career, the ability to travel all over the world and a man she loved.  Now 3 kids later she has gained weight, balances her kids lives, and a husband who is consumed with work.  She keeps looking at her friends and their lives and how they seem so perfect.  When an old boyfriend and a job opportunity end up in her path she isn't sure which way she should go.  What she discovers on the journey is so true to so many lives though.

I think we all find ourselves looking at others, thinking what if I lived there, or had their job, or was in their situation.  The truth of the matter is that the majority of us are right where we belong.  While things look good from a distance, all of us have problems and areas we need to work on.  Love takes work, and in the book Liz and her husband discover that there are things that need to happen in a relationship to keep it going forward.

I really enjoyed the story.  I'd give the book 5 stars.

Books up next, or continuing:
The Passionate Mom by Susan Merril (almost 1/2 way through and it is wonderful!!!)
30 Day Organization Course
30 Nutritional Snacks
Livvie's Song by Sharlene MacLarin

Happy Reading!!

Book Reviews: Book 61

Product Details Book 61 Unglued  Making wise choices in the Midst of Raw Emotion
by Lysa Terkeurst

This book was one of the most amazing books I've read in awhile.  I could completely relate to the fact that it is easy to come Unglued.  Yet, that is not the Mom I want to be.  This book me to see that I am not alone when it comes to reacting with my emotion. It also helped me to realize that I have the power to change how I react.  That power directly comes from God, but that I can tap into it by knowing Him and what He wants for my life.  I'm making imperfect progress, but just the same I am making it.

If you've ever found yourself becoming unglued and looking for somewhere to scream, even if it's your yellow purse, than this book is for you.  Usually when I finish a book and blog about it I remove it from my Kindle.  This one is staying on so I can refer back to it.  Fabulous book an a must read for any parent!

I give this book 5 stars!!

Next up on the reading list:
The Passionate Mom by Susan Merrill
Ciao Bella by Ryan Phillips

Book Reviews: Books 57-60

I'm on a reading frenzy again!  Summer has given me the opportunity to be in the car a lot!

Product Details Book 57 The Day I Met Dr. Seuss by Anne Emerick
This was a fun book, written in Dr. Seuss style, about the author getting a chance to meet Dr. Seuss.  It was a quick read, as it's about as long as Cat in the Hat, but just the same enjoyable.

I'd give the book 5 stars.

Product Details Book 58 The Color of Water in July by Nora Carroll

This book took me a long time to get into.  Once the story got going it was really good.  The book revolves around Jess, who has recently inherited her Grandmother's lake house.  She plans on selling it, but doesn't plan on reliving her last summer there upon her return.  Being 17 seems so long ago, until it all comes flooding back.  The choices she made have caused her to go in the path she has chosen, but is there still time to leave that path and go a different way? What she finds out about her family, may change her future.  Will she let it?  Read to find out.

After reading 1/2 the book I began to really like it.  I'm not one to give up on a book unless it is horrible, and I'm glad I didn't give up on this story as it really did get better.

I give this book 3.5 stars.

Product Details Book 59 Grace, Gold and Glory
by Gabrielle Douglas and Michelle Burford

Wow!  This girl has such an amazing story, and an even more amazing faith.  The book tells where Gabby came from, and how her path led to the Olympics.  I'd HIGHLY recommend this book for any gymnast as well as an girl struggling to find her place in this world. Gabby was honest and open about things she struggled with and how she dealt with them.

Great book. I give it 5 stars!

Product Details Book 60 Picture Perfect by Janice Thompson

Janice Thompson is easily becoming one of my new favorite authors. Each book I've read by her has been wonderful.  The story lines are believable and make it easy to get to know the characters.  Whether you've read other stories in her series or not, the books draw you in.

This story can be read on it's own or after reading her books about Bella the wedding planner.  This book itself is about Hannah and her photography business.  Hannah thinks her only way to succeed is to edge out her competition, Drew, and get closer to the wedding planner in town, Bella.  What she doesn't realize is that she does need to be in contact with both of these people, just not in the way she has planned.  In dealing with her own struggle for who she is and what she can accomplish Hannah begins to realize it takes friends, even if it is her "enemy" to help her succeed. Will Hannah learn her lesson before the current bridezilla wrecks her life?  Guess it's time to open the book to see.

I give this book 5 stars!

Book Reviews: Book 52-53

Product DetailsProduct Details Books 52 and 53
My Life in Pink & Green and My Summer in Pink & Green by Lisa Greenwald

My daughter is not a big reader.  She likes to read, but gets frustrated because her brother and I read really fast.  She started the Harry Potter series and got through book 1, and is currently reading the Hunger Games series, and is on Catching Fire. Due to the fact that she thinks she reads slow she has tended to get books from the library that are very thin, and at this point really not on her reading level, which is high, despite her idea that she reads slowly.  Phil helped her pick these two books out at the library, but knowing nothing about them I figured I better read them first. (of course the fact that it took me 3 days to do so, probably annoyed her!)

The books center around a 12 year old named Lucy.  Her world is getting turned upside down as she discovers her family might not only have to move, but also may lose their pharmacy.  On top of it her best friend Sunny has fallen in love for the first time and needs Lucy's help to make things work out.  Lucy is beginning to feel like everyone needs her help.  In My Life in Pink & Green, she feels she's discovered the answer to the pharmacy's problem and with the help of her sister applies for a grant that will help save her world.  In Book 2 you discover if the grant worked, and what is next for the pharmacy and this group of friends that are learning how to deal with the new concept of boyfriends as they are growing older..  Will Lucy really be able to fix every one's problems?  Will she learn how to fix her own?  Both questions will get answered, if you just take the time to read the stories.

Good preteen/early teen story lines.
I give both of these books 4.5 stars.

Book Review: Books 48, 49 and 50!

Product DetailsBook 48 Truth or Date by Susan Hatler

I was honestly a bit skeptical when I downloaded this free book. I'm trying to be more careful about what I read.  There is so much garbage out there, and while I enjoy a good romance story, I don't need the trash that sometimes comes with it. This book was a pleasant surprise in that regard.

The book centers around Gina Hall who is done with men who won't commit to the relationship.  She had been dating someone for 10 years before he finally admitted he wasn't wanting to get married.  Now as a bridesmaid for her friends upcoming wedding she is surrounded by friends who are all in love.  Just for fun the girls start to play Truth or Dare.  Gina never picks truth so she ends up taking the dare and ends up moving out of her home into her friends apartment, and going on a blind date.  She also ends up getting asked to set up a going away party for Chris Bradley at work.

During the course of finding out what he would like for his party she ends up getting him caught up in her game of Truth or Dare she's been playing, except he changes the rules and makes it Truth or Date.  One date leads to another and soon she isn't sure if they are still playing or actually dating.

The book was an amazingly quick read, funny and realistic.
I give the book 4 stars.

Product DetailsBook 49 A Year at 32 September Way by Mary Ylisela
Five people from three different countries find themselves embarking on a year long adventure in Verona, Italy.  They have all rented apartments in the same building, never realizing how entwined their lives are about to become.

One of them, a writer, is running from her past hurts. Will she find happiness at last? Another tenant is a young couple.  Will they find continued happiness, or will this be the beginning of the end? The next is a young woman looking to finally spend sometime with the love of her life.  Will she discover sometimes people aren't who you think they are, or is he for real?  Then there is the man whose Father has controlled his whole life, will he discover what it means to be free of control, or will lack of control cause him to implode?

The book was one that while somewhat unrealistic was hard to put down once you met each of the characters.  The way their lives began to weave together was interesting, and certainly not what I would have thought it would have been having read the description that came along with this free copy of the book that I downloaded.

I would still recommend this book, I just tend to like more realistic stories, and while I'm sure this is believable for some, it just didn't catch me as that.
I'd give this book 3.5 stars.

Product DetailsBook 50 The Keeper by Suzanne Woods Fisher
I just finished this book yesterday, and all day today have felt kind of sad.  I thought it was the weather, but now as I write this review I think it was the book.
Julia Lapp has so much to think about. Her father is dying, and she is the eldest daughter, her farm is falling apart, her Uncle is a trouble maker (at least in the eyes of the other Amish) and her fiance has called the wedding off again.  How will she manage to maintain her home, watch over her brother and two sisters and deal with Paul's on again off again feelings?

Roman is a traveling Bee Man who visits the Lapp's farm every spring.  He usually quickly moves on, but this year is different.  This year he isn't sure why, but he feels drawn to stay and to take care of Julia and her family.  She gives him a to do list, hoping that once he is done he will move on, but when his Uncle's fiance shows up at the farm, he begins to realize that he must now deal with the past, even if that means settling down.

Juila and Roman have never really connected, but now they are drawn into each other's lives as they try to help her father and her family deal with all the trials they are going through.

The book was good, just sad.  A little too much tragedy.  I tend to like more uplifting stories.
There were some good themes running through the book, and some happiness, I was just not a fan of how she resolved the one major issue that the family was dealing with.

I'd give the book 3 stars.

Book Review: Book 46 and 47

Product Details Book 46: Cafenova by Jane Schevder
Heartbroken over her life in Seattle, Maddy makes a drastic change and moves to the coast of Maine where she buys a sprawling Victorian inn. She dreams of restoring it to it's full glory and opening her own bed and breakfast.  The problem, the contractor is incredible looking and caring on top of it.  She begins to realize that he might not only restore her home, but also her heart.  Will the construction and restoration get in their way to build a future together, or will their pasts destroy it.

This was a quick read, with believable characters and a good story line.
I'd give the book 4 stars.

Product DetailsBook 47 Child of the Mist by Kathleen Morgan
Life in the Scottish highlands in 1565 is not easy.  The clans are battling and it seems that it will never come to an end between the Campbell and MacGregors.  When the MacGregors find a way to capture the leader of the Campbell tribe hope seems to be restored until it is discovered that Anne MacGregor, eldest daughter of the tribe owes the captive a life debt.

New plans must be made to end the feud between the two clans and the only solution seems to be a handfasting between Anne and Niall, the captured clan leader.  Niall soon discovers that his capture was not by accident, so on top of bringing home a woman that many believe could be a witch, he must also discover who has betrayed him.  While Anne is practiced in the healing of her people she soon discovers that while she thought she'd die if she had to give it up, that in reality living without it will be nothing compared to living without the man that she is falling in love with.  Superstition and treachery mark their path though and it will take a miracle for them to survive all that is coming.

The book was amazing.  The dialogue is written in a Scottish tongue, and took some getting used to.  The author weaves an excellent story where just when you think you have it figured out it begins to change in a different direction.  It was really hard to put down especially near the end.

I'd give this book 5 stars.

When her family gets into trouble though, it's that boring man that might be the way out of their peril.  Who should she pursue?  Will she follow her head and protect her family or her heart and find true love. The story had many interesting plot lines.  Just when I thought I'd figured out what would happen another curve was thrown.

Book Review: Book 44

Have a New Husband by Friday Book 44: Have A New Husband by Friday by Dr. Kevin Leman

First of all, I don't want a new husband, and don't think I need a new husband!  I've been reading long enough to know that when you get to a book with a title like this, in truth it will explain how to be a better wife. In turn, when you are a better wife, it will seem that you have a new husband.  Again, not feeling I need that at all, Dr. Leman is a great writer with a lot of creative and great ideas, and I mainly picked it up to see how I could be a better helpmate.

What I've learned from reading this book is that I'm beyond blessed.  Phil is an amazing husband.  I could expand on that a million different ways and all I'd probably get from some people reading this is either a nod of the head or a roll of the eyes.  With that in mind I did learn that I'm not always such an amazing wife.  I don't always listen fully.  I might appear to be listening, but because I'm a woman I multitask in my brain constantly.  You could be talking to me about what you did yesterday and I'm thinking of the 10 things I need to do, the 5 things each of my kids really need to do, and the other gazillion things I'd like to do if I ever had time to do it.  By not giving my full attention to the person talking, I'm not really showing the love I want to.  It's not an easy process.  Women, by God's grace, were wired different.  So I really need to focus when I'm talking to someone else.  I also learned that sometimes we, as wives, expect our husbands to act the way our best girlfriends do.  That's not going to happen so we need to realize that and move on. Treating our husbands with respect and allowing for our differences as men and women.

The book was a good read, with a lot of ideas. I'm glad I read it, and would certainly recommend it for people who may need some help in their marriages as well as wives who just want to reflect on how they are doing.

Not sure if anyone really reads my blog, but just in case here's one last piece of advice that will change your life forever.  DON'T talk about your husband negatively to anyone, especially not in public.  We all make mistakes, do stupid stuff and irritate each other at times.  By bashing your husband in public you are being disrespectful, inconsiderate, and unloving.  I don't think my hubby is perfect, but I know for sure I am not!  If we need to point out flaws we should be pointing them out to each other, not to the world.

I would give this book 5 stars.  I will also give God continual praise for blessing me with a husband I don't deserve.  Love you Phil!

Book Reviews: Books 42-43

Product Details Book 42: Fatal Affair by Marie Force

This book was a fast pace murder mystery romance.  It kept my interest with it's many twists and turns, and while a little "more" than I usually read, it wasn't awful in that area.
The characters were believable.  The story revolves around detective Sam Holland who needs to salvage her career after a previous investigation/arrest has a tragic turn.  The problem is the person closest to the recently found dead Senator is a former fling, and man she never quite forgot.  Now she needs his help to solve the case, but also to get on with her life.
This is the first in a series of books. I got this one for free, and don't feel the need to spend money on the second book to keep reading the series.  It isn't that the book wasn't good, I just prefer FREE!  If it ever comes up free, I might continue on with the series, until that point I'm stopping here.

I'd give the book 4 stars.

Product Details Book 43: The Beginning by Karen Kingsbury

This book is the prequel to a new series she is writing. It was a very quick read, and as good as all of her books. She's one of my favorite authors, so that made it an easy decision on getting this book when it came up FREE on inspiredreads.com.  The story is about several characters and how they must face new beginnings after tragedy strikes their lives.  Their decisions to move on impact those around them. The next book is The Bridge, and this book certainly makes me want to read the next book in the series.

Great as always for Karen Kingsbury.
I give this book 5 stars!

Book Reviews: Book 38-41

Product Details Book 38 The Mother Road by Jennifer Allee

Life takes place, sometimes we think, even when following God's will that we will be protected from harm.  The truth is, that is not the case. We are all human, ok in this sense literary characters, but still as people we are never promised that we will be without trials.  In fact the Bible clearly states that trials will come, but that regardless what that trial is, God will walk by our side and guide us, when we look to Him.  Even when we don't look to Him, He is always there by our side.

This book explores the life of Natalie, a successful Christian writer of books on marriage.  Her husband has suddenly announced that he is leaving her, and suddenly she finds her life falling apart. On top of it her mother is taking a turn for the worst with her Alzheimer's and her sister who lives and hour away from her in California doesn't even speak to her.  Her father, in his wisdom, suggests that the girls come visit their Mom.  So after several mishaps of getting started they hit The Mother Road, Route 66 and begin their drive to Illinois.  Along the way they not only discover who they are to each other, but where they should be headed in their lives.

The book, even with it's somewhat deep subject matter of lives torn apart by decisions that have been made, was filled with moments of laughter and a fun read. Especially, on our own road trip.

I give this book 5 stars.

Product Details Book 39 How to Declutter Your Kitchen Read It. Know It. by Higher Read

I'm an addict of organization books. This one was very much like all the others I've read, in terms of it starting with the 3 box, 3 bag, or 3 pile method of organizing. Basically, whenever you start a job you really need to put everything into 3 piles, either Keep, Get Rid of, Or think about.  Your decisions shouldn't be made on emotions but on practical use.  For instance in the kitchen you don't need 5 veggie peelers. Keep the one that really works, pitch the rusty one, and if you think you may need a back up, put it in the think about pile until you get done with the whole kitchen and then revisit the think about it pile and either keep or get rid of those things as well.

I recently went through my whole kitchen and started as the book suggested with food items first.  Those are really easy in many ways, expired throw out, not expired but don't know why you have them donate and then organize the rest by categories that work for you. For me, my pantry is snacks, dinner helps, breakfast items, lunch items and cans or non perishables.  I have the baking items in another cabinet.  The freezer is meats and ice cream on one shelf, and veggies and freezer meals on another.  Yes, my fridge is also organized, but I won't make you crazy with the details of that.

The book was insightful, especially for someone new to organizing.  I did like the suggestion and may use it as I go through the rest of the house of dating the think about it box, and putting it in an attic or garage.  Make a date to go back through it in 6 months, and if you take anything out of it, redate it. If in 6 months you didn't need anything from it, get rid of the box.  I also liked the idea of thinking about your house in terms of "if I had a week to move, could I do it?"  We all have stuff we really don't need and someone else can use. Decluttering is a process.  I feel good about what I've done so far, but feel far from accomplished on it just the same.  We are getting new floors in 2 rooms in 2 weeks, and in the process of moving everything out of those rooms I know I'll really be careful about what I put back in.

I give this book 5 stars for those who really need help organizing, and 3 1/2 for some of us, who are just organizational addicts!
Book 40 NutJob A Squirrel's Dozen Secret Tips
                                                                  to Productivity by Micah Moss

I'm also addicted to books that give tips for getting more things done. I think the organization and productivity thing goes hand in hand. This book was really fun to read though, as it really did look at squirrels in a light hearted fun way, and how they really focus on what really needs to be done.
The chapters include No Enablers Allowed in the Treehouse, One Nut Mind, and Hoard Those Nuggets. In the chapters the author talks about removing distractions, whether people that are getting in your way of focusing by, changing where you are working, or how much time you allow for visiting each day with co workers. Having the ability to close the door and focus is important. Also, about not keeping a gazillion tabs open on your computer, but focus on one task at a time.  We are all easily distracted, but a squirrel knows what it needs to get done, and does it.  Having a goal is important, but then he also talks about taking that time to play.
Again, it was a really light hearted look at being more productive.

I give this book 5 stars, and would even consider skimming it again to soak a bit more of the squirrly wisdom in.

Product Details Book 41 A Timeless Love by Jeanne Savery

I am a visual person, and this book almost got skipped in terms of reading it on our road trip simply because the cover photo did not load for some reason on my kindle.  I had made the decision recently though that when I couldn't decide what to read next I would go to the book that was on my kindle the longest and read that, and this one was the winner in that category.  I'm glad I did read it, as it was filled with mystery, and unexpected twists, turns and plots.
The book revolves around Beth Ralston who has been sent back in time to recover art. She materializes in front of Lord Alexander and while she does not remember what time period she is really from she begins to wonder if it is the one she has arrived in. As she goes through trying to do her job she finds herself becoming attracted to Lord Alexander.  In the century she has been placed she must rely on him to provide her with the proper story for why she is in the area as well as protection from others. She has become a very independent woman and leaning on someone else and working on their schedule is very difficult for her. Especially, when by revealing her mission to Alexander she is breaking rules set in place to protect the time line.
The book keeps you wondering until the end whether her mission with be completed as well as will she in Alexander find a way to be together even though they may or may not be from different centuries.
A great read. I give the book 5 stars.

Book Reviews: Books 36-37

Product Details Book 36: Until Forever by Darlene Shortridge

This story had a really rough beginning. The characters are pulled apart by a tragedy, that they are not sure they will ever overcome. Jessi and Mark must both learn that on our own we can not overcome anything. We need to lean and trust on God's guidance to get us through life's tough circumstances as well as the day to day issues. Sometimes the choice we make will take years or even a lifetime to get past, but when we trust in Him, things are bound to happen.

The book, while incredibly sad to begin with, had a peace and hope about it that kept me reading it.
The characters were believable and the story was as well.

I would give this book 4 stars.

Book Reviews: Book 35

Book 35: Cinnamon Girl by S.J. MacIver

Back when I first got my Kindle I started to download all the free books that seemed remotely interesting. This is one of the first I downloaded. Now having over 200 Free books on the Kindle it's hard to decide what to read first, so I came to the conclusion that if I can't make a decision I go to the book that I've had the longest. This was that book yesterday. It is an incredibly quick read, although I am recovering from being sick, so it could just be that I was taking the time to read.

The story is about Lacy, a reporter who has had her share of problems in the past.  She is doing a favor for a co worker when she discovers a dead body.  Quickly she gets wrapped up in the events that caused the body to be at the scene, and in the process she begins to get wrapped up with the sheriff's friend.

Mike has moved to this quiet town to pursue a different type of investigative work.  Having been shot in the line of duty, he now is trying to figure out what is next. His new friend Brian introduces him to Lacy.  Once they meet he isn't sure any more which way he should go.  The two, both being investigators in their own field, find themselves investigating crime as well as the possibility of a relationship.

What will end up happening?  It is hard to say, unless you read the book!

I'd give this book 4 stars.

Book Review: Book 32

Product Details Book 32: Crazy Love by Frances Chan

This book can change your life, if you let it.  I had started this book last summer, read a good deal of it and then suggested it to our small group bible study.  This winter we decided to study it together.  It gives you so much to think about.  Frances Chan is a man that God is certainly using.  Just from reading his book, and bits and pieces about him, I can tell that he would not say that he has it all together.  That he is rather a work in progress, as we all are.  The difference is that for him, he realizes that what really matters is eternity.  Something I will openly admit there are days I don't think about.
So many days we are filled up with the here, the now, the what needs to get done.  We forget about taking time to make sure that we are taking time to invest in the eternity of others.  How do we do that?  By truly believing and living the way Christ asked us to live.  We need to be in love with the Lord.  Following His teaching, and really if we aren't taking time with Him, we can't possibly succeed.  How many relationships do you know where they continue even though the people spend zero time together?  Relationships can't last that way, but that's the amount of time we often give to the Lord. Zero.  If we truly believe that He came so that we may be set free from the bondage of sin, than we should desire to spend time with Him.
While having finished this book just last month, I feel already like I want to reread it. This time straight through instead a chapter a week, just to be reminded again how to be connected with Jesus.

This book can change your life, but if you are looking for a the ultimate life changing book, I think even Frances Chan would say, start with the Bible.  Read the book of John, and learn of God's great sacrifice for you, and the world.

I would give this book 10 stars!  (even though I've been using a 5 star max)

Book Review: Book 31

Whew! Sometimes life certainly can get busy.  Seems all my "reading" time has been replaced with a gazillion other things lately.  Looking forward to a long road trip with time to read in the car, as well as time to read off and on in the day with summer almost here!

Book 31:
Kate's Kisses by Mary Manners

This was a "sweet" quick read. The main character Kate is running the bakery in town when the man that walked out of her life, suddenly walks back in.  Logan and had plans to spend the rest of their lives together, but an unexpected twist in her life finds her feeling like she needed to be there for her family, and instead of joining her on that mission, he left.  What's he doing back now?  Will he stay or is this just another passing moment in her life?

Her sisters don't want her dreams to die, so they begin to find ways to get Logan and Kate back together.  They feel that it is time that she moves on with her life and stops worrying about them, after all they are all now old enough to care for themselves.

This book was easy to get caught up in, and believable.  It wasn't too sappy either, which made it quiet enjoyable.  Plus, when they discuss chocolate it's hard to walk away from that!

I would give this book 4 stars.

Book Reviews: Book 27-30

Books 27-30 were also a part of series.  When I read a series, I have a hard time stopping until I've completed the whole set.  The first 2 books in this series I downloaded onto my Kindle for Free.  Realizing there were 2 more and that they were only $2.99 each, I decided to splurge and get the rest of the series.

Book 4 Product Details Just for Fun by Rosalind James
Emma has had to build a life for her and her son for the past 1several years, after a nonhoneymoon honeymoon leaves her expecting her greatest gift ever.  Nic has been making his way to the top of the rugby world.  One look at the little boy at rugby camp knocks Nic back on his heels.  Could this little boy be his? Will Emma except his apology for leaving her stranded?  Will this new parenting relationship change the rest of their friendships and careers as well.  Can something that was just for fun, become the piece of life they have been missing for so long?

In order to really understand these characters and their stories, as well as how they are interconnected you'll have to read the books.  They are all a bit "steamy", which is not typically what I read.  I was drawn into the stories of their lives though after the first book, and decided to just skim past the parts that I wouldn't normally read.

Overall I'd give the series 3 stars.  I liked the stories, but wished they could happen without the steam!
